Jason Caldwell is a third-generation minister and a fifth-generation hunter. He was introduced to hunting, fishing, trapping, and the ancient sport of falconry by his father, Howard, who first read a book about the sport in the eighth grade. Jason became a licensed falconer as a young teen in the early 90’s and since then, he has expanded his work with birds of prey. In 2006, he and his father, Howard, started Raptors Up Close, an educational organization teaching people about birds of prey. These combined skills of falconer and educator give the public a unique insight into the world of raptors. Besides getting his raptor educational permit, Jason is also licensed to propagate raptors, breeding many different species, permitted to do abatement work with raptors, and is also a licensed master bander. He presently has a large assortment of hawks, falcons, and owls in his collection. Jason is the current president of the West Virginia Falconry Club.

Raptors Up Close has done programming for events such as: The Smithsonian Institute, the Great American Outdoor Show, West Virginia’s Annual National Hunting and Fishing Days, the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, the federal National Conservation Training Center, the Western Virginia Sport Show, numerous other museums, societies, hunting shows, and educational venues. Jason is a proud member of the North American Falconer’s Association, the Potomac Falconer’s Association, the Virginia Falconer’s Association, and a founding member of the West Virginia Falconry Club.
