From My Heart

In Jonah 1, the prodigal prophet is running away from God. He was told to go to Nineveh, but he got on a ship and headed in the exact opposite direction. He did not want to do what God called him to do, so he ran from God. He went to the port city of Joppa, and paid the fare to go across the Mediterranean, taking him as far away from Nineveh as he could go.

Once out on the Mediterranean, God caused a huge storm to rage against the ship. Verse 4 tells us it was a “mighty tempest.” It appeared the ship would sink and everyone and everything would be lost. The captain and crew realized their lives were in grave danger, and in verse 7, decided to cast lots to determine who was the cause of this “evil” that had come upon them.

So, why cast lots to determine the answer they were seeking? They cast lots because that was the only thing they knew to do! These mariners did not know the God of Heaven! In verse 5, they had already prayed to their own personal gods - and there was no answer - so they did the only thing they knew to do!

Last week, I asked the question about what the world does when trouble strikes. To whom do the unsaved turn when they need help? In verse 7, we see a classic response of how the world handles trouble: they simply do the thing they know to do! They behave the way they have been taught to behave! In this case, it was to cast lots! You say, “Why didn't they pray to God?” The answer to that question is because they did not know Jehovah God.

The Apostle Paul said in Philippians 4:6, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” As believers we can pray to God for help! The word, “careful” in this verse means we are not to be anxious, or fret, or to not worry! Worry is to assume responsibility God never intended you to have! I Peter 5:7 says, “Casting all your care upon him: for He careth for you.”

When the Lord Jesus was asleep in the boat, and the storm blew up on the Sea of Galilee, the Disciples thought they were going to be drowned in the sea. They shook Him and said, “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” And of course, the Apostle Peter was right there when this happened! They certainly cast their cares upon Him that day! And Jesus stood and raised His hand in the air and said, “Peace, be still.”

The point is, Peter knew Jesus cared! He had experienced His care and that enabled him to say we can cast our care upon Jesus because Jesus cares for us! Peter had experienced that great truth, many, many times! The Disciples did not have to cast lots to see what to do, they knew the Lord Jesus was there, so they simply cried out to Him.

Let's trust in the Lord Jesus as we face our trials and troubles. You will find the same thing as did the Disciples: Jesus cares.
